Rubidium-82 (Rb-82) is used for PET myocardial perfusion imaging. Which property of Rb-82 makes it a PRACTICAL tracer for cardiac PET at centers without an on-site cyclotron?
D. Rb-82 is produced from a Sr-82/Rb-82 generator (75-second half-life), enabling PET MPI without an on-site cyclotron
Rb-82 has a physical half-life of only 75 seconds, decaying by positron emission. It is produced from a strontium-82 (Sr-82) generator, which has a 4-week useful life. This generator system allows centers to perform PET myocardial perfusion imaging without needing an on-site cyclotron (unlike N-13 ammonia, which requires a nearby cyclotron due to its 10-min half-life). Rb-82 is an analogue of potassium and is taken up by cardiomyocytes via Na/K-ATPase. Its very short half-life means the entire PET stress/rest study can be completed in under 1 hour.
